Acting Premier and District Administration Minister the Hon. Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, JP kicks off the road-paving project in Cayman Brac.

After a 30-year hiatus, Cayman Brac roads are receiving a face-lift.

Major road upgrading recently began and a one-mile stretch of Spot Bay Road has already been resurfaced, with another mile underway. These ongoing road works were enabled by the Ministry of District Administration, Works, Lands and Agriculture’s recent acquisition of an asphalt plant and heavy equipment.

Launching the upgrading project on 30 June, Acting Premier and District Administration Minister the Hon. Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, JP and Ministry Chief Officer Kearney Gomez were joined by District Commissioner Ernie Scott and Deputy District Commissioner B. L. (Mark) Tibbetts, for a visit to the asphalt plant site.

As the group watched the preparation of the road surfacing material, the Minister commented, “This is a momentous day for Cayman Brac. Our roads were in dire need and even in this stringent economy, this government managed to find the funds to improve safety and beautify the island.

“An upgraded road infrastructure supports sectors such as tourism and agriculture. By improving the road network now, we are positioning the Sister Islands to make a greater impact on the country’s economic growth,” the Minister underscored. Mrs. O’Connor-Connolly applauded the Brac’s Public Works Department crew for their diligence in setting up the asphalt plant and getting the programme started. She further thanked the National Roads Authority for their assistance with personnel and special heavy equipment.

When the Hon. O’Connor-Connolly and her staff moved on to Spot Bay where the first layer of asphalt was to be laid, Project Manager Colford Scott presented Cayman flags to Officer Paul Leonce and Mr. Tibbetts for placement on the dump truck that transported the initial load of asphalt to the site.

It was then the Acting Premier’s turn; Mrs. O’Connor-Connolly took command of the paver’s controls to start the first vital stretch. While general road maintenance is conducted by the Brac PWD, this first major road resurfacing project will ultimately impact much of Cayman Brac’s road network.
